      Used Equipment

At Microfluidics, we want our customers to meet their demanding manufacturing goals. Our viewpoint on used equipment is that it can be impossible to know exactly how the machine was used & cared for by its previous owners and what materials were processed through it.

There is a risk that something from past processing may show up in your manufacturing, or the machine may not have been well looked after and is now not performing at its best. This can compromise the safety of your staff and the quality of the products you are producing.

This page highlights some of the dangers of using second-hand machinery and how we can help you to transfer to more reliable models.

      Our Used Equipment Policy

A copy of our Used Equipment Policy can be found online here.

Our policy reflects that we cannot assure users that Used Equipment has been maintained, used with the correct consumables and used in accordance with manufacturer instructions. In addition, we cannot establish what materials may have been processed through the machine, which could pose a risk to our staff.

We can support all IDEX Ex-Demonstration equipment in accordance with our policy guidelines.

Our global teams are on hand to offer advice on how to transfer to new current systems and technologies. Let us help you protect against unexpected errors from used equipment & ensure your continued manufacturing success. Please contact us to discuss.

The Risks When Buying Used Equipment

When buying used equipment, it is easy to think of the cost saving compared to that of procuring a new machine. However, it is vital to consider the total cost of ownership and the cost of risk should something go wrong. Below are some key aspects to consider before purchasing a second-hand machine.

Safety & Compliance: Unless the machine comes with a full history and genuine documentation it is impossible to know exactly what materials were processed on the equipment. Can you be sure that they weren’t hazardous? What happens if there are still remnants of this material and it gets into your process? What is the risk to your customers and the safety of your operators? What is the cost to you legally and reputationally?

Application & Performance: Do you know exactly how the equipment was run by the previous owners – did they run it according to the recommendations in the manual? Could it have become damaged in usage or transport? Although the machine may have worked for the previous owners, maybe it is not configured to achieve what you have as a target. Is the machine now on the Microfluidics list of obsolete models and no longer supported?

Technical Integrity: Do you know how the equipment was cared for by the prior operators? Did the equipment have regular servicing and do you know if original OEM parts were used as opposed to cheaper, inferior alternatives? Has the equipment been modified in any way that is not according to the original drawings or manuals?

Support: What support have you been offered as part of the purchase of the used equipment? What warranties are provided and is there any validation certification supplied? Can you guarantee that you will be able to get the spares you need?  Who is going to service the machine?

      Risks With Used Equipment

      • Reputational damage
      • Legal liability
      • Operator safety
      • Cross-contamination
      • Hidden wear
      • Obsolete software
      • Unknown service history
